Performance Management

Performance management can be defined as an ongoing process of communication between supervisors and employees to help achieve an organization’s strategic objectives, or to put it simply it is the ability to change people's behaviour. But why can it be so difficult to achieve at times?  Psychology has a few surprising answers to this perplexing problem.

Studies of heart bypass patients shows that the only real cure is for them to start taking better care of themselves, such as stop smoking, eat less, and take exercise. Yet, repeatedly very few ever do! When patients were reviewed 2 years after surgery, on average 90% have made no significant changes to their lifestyles.

Here people are literally in a life or death situation, yet they don’t change. They face more pain, more surgery and even death itself.
So how can we change people at work when they will not help themselves when facing with a major personal health issue?

A Harvard Business School study showed that the solution is to directly address people's feelings to help them change behaviour.
A successful approach is to create a holistic solution.   For the medical patients the holistic approach included targeting their feelings by having them attend regular ongoing support groups with instruction in aerobic exercise, relaxation and yoga. The study showed that after 3 years over 75% of the patients succeeded with lifestyle changes and avoided further surgery compared to only 10% who succeed when only given written instructions.

This holistic method works equally well in the training and work environment as change is reframed. Rather than trying to motivate people with fear; they are inspired as making daily work life more enjoyable is a powerful motivator.

Learning Lesson: Immerse and support people in a new idea or change rather than just simply telling them about it.
